Portrait Session Prep Guide

  • 1. Communicate Your Vision

Share your goals: Before the session, chat with Gillian about the style and feel you want for your portraits (e.g., natural, editorial, dramatic, etc.). If you have a specific location or background in mind, let her know.

Look through her portfolio: See if there are any styles or poses you love. That way, you’ll both be on the same page.

  • 2. Plan Your Outfits

Consider the background: Choose colors that either contrast or complement the shoot's location. If it’s outdoors, earthy tones might work well. For studio shots, more vibrant colors can pop against neutral backgrounds.

Avoid busy patterns: Simple, solid colors tend to work best, but subtle patterns like stripes or polka dots can work too. Just avoid anything too distracting.

Bring options: Having 2–3 outfit changes can give variety to your shoot. Choose pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident.

Shoes matter: Even if they aren’t the focal point, they can still show up in full-body shots. Make sure they match your outfit and aren’t scuffed or overly worn.

  • 3. Hair & Makeup

Go for natural, but polished: If you’re doing your own makeup, aim for a slightly more polished version of your everyday look. It’ll show up better in photos.

Avoid heavy makeup unless you’re aiming for a glam look: If you usually wear minimal makeup, it’s best to keep it natural. If you’re unsure, ask Gillian for suggestions on makeup style for the session.

Touch up your hair: If you’re doing your own hair, give it a little extra TLC before the session—whether it’s a fresh blowout or just a tidy-up to avoid flyaways.

Consider professional hair/makeup artists: If you want to go all-out, hiring someone to do your hair and makeup can make a big difference.

  • 4. Skin Care & Grooming

Hydrate the day before: Drink plenty of water to ensure your skin looks fresh.

Avoid new skincare products right before the session: Stick to your usual skincare routine to prevent any potential skin reactions.

Shave or groom as needed: If you usually shave, wax, or groom any area, do so beforehand. Just be cautious with freshly shaved skin, as it can sometimes look irritated in photos.

  • 5. Nails

Keep nails simple: Neat nails can make a big difference. Go for neutral shades or clear polish if you’re unsure, as bold colors can distract from your face.

Consider the shoot’s aesthetic: If you’re going for an elegant vibe, you might want to lean toward something more classic, while a more casual or creative shoot could work with fun colors.

  • 6. Poses & Body Language

Practice in front of the mirror: It might sound silly, but practicing a few basic poses (like standing tall, sitting comfortably, or turning your body slightly) can help you feel less awkward when the session starts.

Relax your body: If you’re feeling tense, your photos can show it. Focus on softening your posture, rolling your shoulders back, and taking a deep breath.

Be open to direction: Gillian will guide you through poses and angles. Don’t be afraid to trust her expertise—she likely has a vision for you that will bring out your best self.

  • 7. Bring Props or Personal Items

Personal touches can make a difference: If you have an item that’s meaningful to you—whether it’s a book, a piece of jewelry, or something else—consider incorporating it into the shoot.

Avoid overloading with props: While it’s fun to add personal items, you don’t want to go overboard. Keep it simple so the focus remains on you.

  • 8. Hydrate & Rest the Night Before

Get a good night's sleep: Resting up before the session will help you feel energized and look fresh.

Stay hydrated: This keeps your skin looking dewy and healthy, especially when you’re being photographed.

  • 9. Arrive Early

Allow time for any last-minute tweaks: Showing up 10–15 minutes early will give you time to settle in, get adjusted to the space, and work with Gillian on any final details.

  • 10. Be Yourself!

Let your personality shine: A portrait session is all about capturing the real you. Relax, have fun, and don’t be afraid to show your true self—whether it’s quirky, serious, or somewhere in between!
